Beside your favourite swiss army knife that goes by the name of Virtualdub, you might find a valuable companion in this little piece of software simply called AVIedit 4 for the tasks that Virtualdub doesn't handle.
AVIedit combines bitmap editing with the features of a video-editor, therefore you can easily import a series of stills (bmp, gif, jpg, tga) or animations (gif, fli, flc) and export them as avi-files or the other way. Furthermore you will find a rudimentary thumbnail image browser and a batch processor for bitmap treatments.
The video edit section carries many of the normal editing options (cut/copy/paste) for video and audio streams, including an Adobe Photoshop compatible plug-in host system as well as approximately 30 other built-in effects.
Projects States can be saved by using the Timeline Editor which can also be used to perform audio manipulation (gain audio by percentage, fade in and fade out audio tracks, mix stereo and mono, mix sounds with different sampling frequencies) and fading between any two overlapped clips.
VfW, WDM and TWAIN (scanners, digicams etc.) compatible devices are supported, allowing live video capture, extracting of single frames and series of frames, and video snapshots to a file or clipboard.
I think the most interesting part of this application is it's bridge function between stills
and movies, it's great for creating stills out of movies and videostreams, and of course converting stills to movies.
I wouldn't recommend it as a video editor over Virtualdub, but as a valuable addition to Virtualdub.
